Africanis is the indigenous dog of Africa that is descended from ancient Egyptian dogs found throughout the Nile Delta. The first record of a domestic dog in South Africa dates to 570 AD and its remains were found in die area of modern-day Ellisras. The first written record of these dogs is in Vasco da Gama’s diary in which he refers to the Khoikhoi. He writes: "They have many dogs like those of Portugal which bark as do these.” This type of dog has never been subjected to intentional breeding. As such they are well adapted to the African environment, resistant to common diseases, tolerant of parasites and less affected by hereditary diseases. The historian G.M Theal writes of these dogs: "He was an ugly creature, his body being shaped like that of a jackal, and the hair on his spine being turned forward; but he was a faithful, serviceable animal of his kind”.
